Jemimah

Meet Jemimah!

Jemimah was the first student chosen to join our education fund in 2016. She has just completed S4 and has received amazing O-level results.

Jemimah has excelled in her studies throughout high school, always making it into the top 10 in her class of 140 pupils. Jemimah spends her free time making beautifully crafted bags and baskets which she sells to help support her mum and her 3 siblings.

Jemimah's father was a fisherman and sadly died at work when she was very young, Jemimah works part-time as a bookkeeper for the fishermen and feels connected to him by doing this. Her mother suffers from diabetes and unfortunately Uganda lacks affordable long-term treatment for this. As such, her mother has been out of work for a while, meaning they lost their family business and their home.

It is our hope that when Jemimah finishes college she will be able to help get herself and her family back on their feet. She is an avid storyteller and is an expert on Uganda's history, cultures, and wildlife. It is her dream to become a tour guide, sharing her love of Uganda with people from all over the world. Jemimah will be enrolling on a Tourism Management Diploma course -Covid-19 dependant- in August 2021.

Disan

Disan is the second student to join Project Muyembe. He has just completed S1 and finished with the highest grades in his year. Disan is 15 years old, his mother died when he was 10 and he has never known his dad.

Disan lives with his grandma, Nansamba Dorothy, who is pictured here with him. Dorothy is very supportive of Disan and is always quick to offer big hugs and cups of chai to our volunteers when they visit.

Because Disan finished top in his year, his school gave him a discount on his S2 tuition fees. We decided to let Disan keep the difference in money since he worked so hard to achieve his grades. We expected a 15 year old boy to use the money to celebrate and buy some games or clothes, but Disan used the money to buy a piglet. He explained to us that he hopes to raise and breed the piglet so that eventually it will become a small source of income to help his grandma who is getting too old to work.

Disan has spent lockdown undertaking a painting apprenticeship, but wants to continue his studies so that he can become an engineer. Disan believes that gaining an education is important if he is to achieve his dreams, support his family, and become a respected member of the community.

Ronald

Ronald is the third student to join Project Muyembe and this photo was taken on his first day of high school. We know he will study hard and achieve good grades. He also hopes to join the school football and debate team.

Ronald is 14 years old and has always dreamed of being a mechanical engineer. Ronald's mum is a single parent of 5 children. She works hard all day growing crops and looking after the family, however with just one income she doesn't have the extra money to pay for the expensive tuition fees.

We're so humbled that - thanks to our amazing supporters - we are now able to help Ronald achieve his dreams. But, there are so many other children like Ronald who deserve this chance and, with your donations, we can work together to help change more lives.

Namugenyi Margaret

Margaret is our newest student, she is 13 years old and is currently in Primary 7. Margaret is an incredible young lady who exceeds expectations daily, performing top in all her classes, helping her family with their crops, and showing off her netball talents.

Margaret dreams of becoming a teacher so that she can return the gift of education to the next generation in Kayenje.
