Kayenje Education Fund
The Kayenje Education Fund was established in 2014. The Fund raises money to provide scholarships to children who excel in their Primary Leaving Exams and who could otherwise not afford school tuition fees, mostly they are orphans or come from single-parent homes.
Primary school is free in Uganda, but many children cannot progress further due to the high cost of secondary school fees. This results in children aged just 11 or 12 finishing school with next to no future prospects and no way of supporting themselves or their family. For girls, this often leads to early marriage and childbirth. For boys, this can be the start of a lifetime of dangerous informal labour.
School fees and supplies cost just £175 per year for one student. However, to put that into perspective, the average Ugandan earns just $3 a day.
Although education itself is valuable, we also want our students to finish with a guaranteed job. That’s why our scholarships support each of our students from S1 through to S4 before continuing to fund them for a further 2 years at a vocational college of their choice. These colleges allow them to gain diplomas in subjects like business, engineering, teaching, and nursing.
The total cost of a full 6-year scholarship for our students is just £1500, and the amount of students we can support depends entirely on the donations we receive from our supporters, so please give what you can to help.
